This advanced literature course on 20th-century Arabic prose covers the life and work of major writers of the Arab world: Naguib Mahfouz, Nawal El Saadawi, Ghassan Kanafani, and Tayyeb Salih. The selections—novel excerpts, essays, short stories—expose the student to various literary styles, advanced vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions, as well as foster a deep appreciation and understanding of Arabic linguistic, literary, and cultural trends. The course includes advanced reading, writing, and speaking activities. Lastly, the course involves not only comprehension but translation of Arabic text to English as a regular activity.
